CLARENCE — Congressman Chris Collins (NY-27) presented the recovered Purple Heart Medal of Army Sergeant Daniel J. Shaw, who was killed in combat while serving in Iraq, to his parents Ronald and Brenda Shaw. Sgt. Shaw enlisted into the United States Army during Operation Iraqi Freedom and served two tours in Iraq.
“Sergeant Shaw is a hero to myself, Western New York, and the country,” said Congressman Collins. “He sacrificed himself for our freedom and that is a debt we can never pay back. I am honored that my office was able to recover the Purple Heart Medal so his family can be reminded of how much strength and courage their son had.”
Sgt. Shaw graduated from West Seneca West Class of 2003, where he attended college for a year before enlisting into the United States Army. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division. While deployed, Sgt. Shaw served in a combat area from January to August 2005 during his first tour and then returned for a second deployment in October 2006. Sgt. Shaw was getting ready to complete his second tour of duty with the Second Battalion of Camp Ramadi before he was killed in combat by an explosion in Taji, Iraq. He was 23 years old.
Sgt. Shaw was additionally awarded the Army Commendation Medal, Navy Unit Commendation, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, and Iraqi Campaign Medal.
Surrounded by family and friends, Ronald and Brenda Shaw were presented with the Purple Heart Medal recovered by Congressman Collins’s office, an American Flag that was flown over the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. and a Congressional Certificate of Commendation.
