Canisius women’s basketball has signed three players to National Letters of Intent as part of the Class of 2023.
“We are excited to have our first recruiting class coming together,” said head coach Scott Hemer. “We feel that this group of guards are exactly what we are looking for in terms of skill set, work ethic and winning mind set.”
Dominique Doss | G | 5-8 | Reisterstown, Md. | Franklin
Doss is a 5-8 combo guard from Reisterstown, Md., where she attends Franklin High School. Through her high school career, Doss has twice been named First Team All-Baltimore County and 695 Hoops Second Team All-Metro. Entering her senior season at Franklin, Doss has already accumulated 1,094 points, 350 rebounds, 250 assists and 200 steals. Doss’ father DeWitt Doss played for the Blue and Gold from 2000-05 and is a member of the 1,000-point club.
Hemer’s comments on Doss: “Dom has a connection to Western New York, with her father being a former member of the men’s team here at Canisius. She brings versatility to our perimeter, both with her ability to stretch a defense as well as aggressively attack the basket.”
Giavanna Esposito | G | 5-7 | Staten Island, N.Y. | St. Joseph by the Sea
Esposito is a senior at St. Joseph by the Sea High School in Staten Island, N.Y., where she has been a member of the varsity girls’ basketball team since her freshman year. In that time, Esposito has averaged 15.5 points per game. Esposito collected her 1,000th career point Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Vikings 64-56 win over Kellenberg.
Hemer’s comments on Esposito: “Gia is a quick guard who plays well with the ball in her hands as well as floating on the perimeter. Her quick release from beyond the arc will provide us with a much-needed option from outside”
Amaya Santiago | G | 5-9 | Elmwood Park, N.J. | Putnam Science Academy
Prior to attending Putnam Science Academy, Santiago played at Immaculate Conception High School. While at Immaculate Conception, the guard averaged 16.4 points, 10.0 rebounds 3.7 assists and 2.2 steals per game in 2017-18. For her high school career, she has collected 622 points, 314 rebounds, 106 assists and 68 steals.
Hemer’s comments on Santiago: “We feel that Amaya brings a high level of athleticism to our team and is a college ready guard, both with her skill level as well as her physical strength.”
Canisius will return to action on Dec. 21, when the team hosts Vermont for its final non-conference game of the season. Tip is set for 2 p.m. on ESPN+.
