UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS

EAST LANSING, Mich. – The University at Buffalo wrestling team dropped a hard-fought dual at Michigan State, 28-12, on Wednesday night. The loss snapped the Bulls’ three game winning streak.
Derek Spann earned the first points for the Bulls with an 11-5 decision over Anthony Tutolo at 133 lbs. A late four-point near fall by Spann was the difference in the match. Spann stayed perfect on the season in duals, improving to 5-0.
At 149, Jason Estevez suffered a two-point takedown with just 20 seconds left to turn a 6-5 victory into a 7-6 defeat and gave the Spartans a 10-3.
Alex Smythe scored all five of his points in the third period, including a pair of takedowns to earn a 5-4 decision over Jake Tucker at 157 lbs.
Michigan State won the next three matches, including a pin, to take a commanding 28-6 lead in the dual.
Buffalo finished strong by winning the final two matches of the dual. Aided by two third-period takedowns, Brett Perry took an 8-5 decision over Nick May. Jake Gunningcapped off the dual with a 7-4 decision over Christian Rebottaro at 285.
“We were right in the mix,” head coach John Stutzman said. “A few guys close out the period and a few others are ready, then it’s a different outcome. We continue to get beat by things that we talk about and work on.”
The Bulls will next wrestle at Binghamton on December 6.
