The Canisius hockey team closes out the first half of the regular season this weekend when it takes to the road to face Atlantic Hockey foe Army in a two-game series at Tate Rink in West Point, N.Y.
The Golden Griffins and the second-place Black Knights begin their series Friday with a 7 p.m. contest before wrapping up the weekend set with a 4 p.m. matchup on Saturday.
Scouting Canisius
• Canisius takes to the ice for the final time in the fall semester looking to build upon its three-point weekend against Sacred Heart at home last weekend.
• Senior Dylan McLaughlin has been the catalyst of the Canisius attack this season, pacing the team with nine goals and 18 points. McLaughlin leads Atlantic Hockey and is tied for fourth nationally in both categories heading into the weekend.
• Junior Nick Hutchison ranks second on the team’s scoring chart with 13 points on seven goals and six assists. Hutchison has recorded a point in each of the Griffs last four games.
• Senior defenseman Jimmy Mazza leads the squad in assists (11) and sits third in scoring (13). Mazza has done most of his scoring this season while Canisius has been on the power play as eight (1g, 7a) of his 13 points have come while the Griffs have had the man advantage.
• Junior Blake Weyrick leads the Canisius goaltending unit, posting a .889 save percentage and a 3.39 goals against average in eight starts this season.
• Canisius has been solid on special teams this season as the Griffs rank among the top 25 teams in the nation in both power play (19.4/22nd) and penalty kill (82.8/25th) percentage.
Canisius Takes Three of Four Points from Sacred Heart
• Canisius claimed its first series victory of the season during Thanksgiving Weekend as it recorded a tie and win against visiting Sacred Heart last weekend at Harborcenter.
• The Griffs and Pioneers played to a 3-3 tie in the opener before junior Casey Jerry tallied a shorthanded goal in the final two minutes of the third period to propel Canisius to a 3-2 victory in the finale.
• Freshman Kevin Obssuth, senior Dylan McLaughlin and junior Nick Hutchison accounted for the three Griffs’ goals in the opener while senior Cameron Heath dished out two assists.
• In the finale, Jerry, McLaughlin and sophomore Grant Meyer all found the back of the net as Cansius battled back from an early 2-0 deficit to post its second one-goal triumph of the campaign.
• Junior Blake Weyrick recorded 27 saves in the finale, including the final 20 shots he faced, to post his second victory of the season.
Scouting Army
• Sitting in a tie with AIC for second place in the league standings with 13 points, Army heads into its final weekend of play during the fall semester looking to build off a home split with league-leading Niagara last weekend.
• Senior defenseman Dalton MacAfee paces a balanced Black Knights offense with team highs of 13 assists and 15 points. Fellow blueliner Alex Wilkinson is second in both categories with 12 assists and 14 points, respectively.
• Junior Dominic Franco serves as the team’s top goal scorer, having found the back of the net eight times through the first 15 games of the 2018-19 campaign. Franco posted a hat trick in the Black Knights 5-1 victory over the Purple Eagles at home last Saturday.
• Sophomores Trevin Kozlowski and Jared Dempsey have split time in goal this season, combining to post a .902 save percentage and a 2.13 goals against average in 906 minutes of action.
Canisius-Army Series Notes
• Canisius holds an all-time record of 27-26-6 against Army West Point, highlighted by a 25-21-6 advantage over the Black Knights in the Division I era of the series.
• The schools have been pretty evenly matched in recent contests as the Griffs hold an 8-6-2 edge in their last 16 meetings.
• Canisius has posted a 9-13-3 record in 25 previous road contests against Army. The Griffs swept the Black Knights in their most recent series at Tate Rink, recording a pair of one-goal victories last November.
• Canisius took three-of-four contests from Army last season, sweeping the Black Knights in a Thanksgiving Weekend series at Tate Rink (Canisius, 4-3 (ot); Canisius, 3-2) before the two sides split a series at Harborcenter in February (Canisius, 4-1; Army, 3-2).
Student versus Teacher
• Canisius second-year head coach Trevor Large faces one of his mentors his weekend in Army West Point head coach Brian Riley.
• Prior to joining the Canisius program as an assistant coach for the 2014-15 season, Large spent six years with the Black Knights (2008-14), serving as the program’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator under the veteran Riley.
• During his time at West Point, Large worked with all facets of the program – forwards, defensemen, power play and penalty kill – helping coach six all-conference performers and three selections to the league’s all-rookie team. He also served as the team’s video coordinator.
