BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo State women’s basketball enters Saturday’s “Battle by the Lake” showdown with a 5-1 overall record having recently earned a 79-49 victory over Alfred State. Liv LeBaron (Corning/Corning East) leads the Bengals averaging 19.8 points and 8.5 rebounds/game. Princella McCullough (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) is averaging 14.6 points and leads the team with 12.6 rebounds/game, while Grace Licata (Williamsville/Williamsville South) is shooting 63 percent from the floor and 56 percent from 3-point range to the tune of 14.3 points/game.
Fredonia enters the contest 1-3 overall with a recent 62-53 win over Medaille in non-conference action. Sarah Sweazy leads the Blue Devils with 12.3 points and 4.3 rebounds/game. Former Bengal Rae White is averaging 11.5 points/game, while Jenna Einink is chipping in 10.0 points and 11.0 rebounds/game.

Men’s basketball enters Saturday’s “Battle by the Lake” contest with a 2-2 overall record having recently earned a 98-93 victory over Alfred State on Wednesday. Dom Grayer (Brooklyn/Bishop Loughlin) leads Buffalo State averaging 21.3 points/game. Sheldon Adams (Rochester/Bishop Kearney) is averaging 19.5 points/game, while Kay Grant (Jamaica/Thomas Jefferson) is chipping in 13.3 points and 10.5 rebounds/game.
Fredonia enters the contest 0-3 overall following a recent loss to Waynesburg. Isaiah Ice is leads the team with 15.5 points/game. De’Quan Smith is the only other Blue Devil scoring in double figures with 10.7 points/game.
Saturday’s “Battle by the Lake” contests also serve as the SUNYAC openers for each team. Women’s Basketball finished 8-10 in conference play last season and earned a spot in SUNYAC semifinals with a 54-51 upset win over No. 3 Cortland in the quarterfinals, while the men’s team finished 5-13 in conference play last year.
The series will return in January with a home-and-home men’s hockey weekend. The Bengals will host the Blue Devils on Friday, January 25 at 7 p.m. in the Ice Arena before traveling to Fredonia on Saturday, January 26 for a 7 p.m. showdown.
Established for the 2014-15 season, the “Battle by the Lake” is a season-long “all sports” competition between Buffalo State and Fredonia. Each sport in which the two schools compete is worth two points annually. Each game on Saturday carries one point for the winning school. Fredonia currently leads the “Battle by the Lake” by a slim 6-4 margin.
