NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Niagara University men’s basketball team defeated the Mercyhurst Lakers, 85-73, in an exhibition contest on Monday night.  

SYNOPSIS
Playing in their only exhibition game prior to the start of the regular season, the Purple Eagles used a balanced scoring attack to ease past the Lakers. 12 out of the 13 Purple Eagles who played scored including eight with at least six points. Defensively, NU forced 14 turnovers which led to 15 point.

MOMENTS

  • After briefly trailing 4-0, James Towns and Marvin Prochet combined to score eight straight points as the Purple Eagles went ahead for the only lead change in the game.
  • Towns converted a three-point play to give Niagara a 23-10 lead with 10:31 left in the first half.
  • Greg King’s two-handed dunk pushed the Purple Eagles’ lead to 30-18 with 8:30 remaining.
  • NU twice had a 15-point lead before going into halftime with a 44-31 advantage.
  • Early in the second, the Purple Eagles extended their lead to 55-36 with an 8-0 run with triples provided by Chris Barton and Keleaf Tate, and a layup by Dominic Robb.  


EAGLE’S EYE ON…

  • Marvin Prochet netted a game-high 16 points  on 5 of 10 shooting. He grabbed seven rebounds and had a game-best plus 20 rating.
  • Keleaf Tate was second on the team with 13 points.
  • James Towns had a team-high four assists and scored nine points.


INSIDE THE NUMBERS

  • Niagara led as much as 19 points.
  • NU outscored Mercyhurst 28-22 in the paint and 12-2 in fast break points.
  • The Purple Eagles led for 37:55
