BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Purple Eagles volleyball team fell to Canisius in straight sets in the second installment of the Battle of the Bridge on Saturday.

Match Summary 
First Set

  • Niagara and Canisius were tied early in the first set, 5-5, but two 3-0 runs from the Griffs put them ahead, 11-6.
  • A 4-0 run from Canisius extended its lead, 16-8. The Purple Eagles came within five points of the Griffs, 16-11, after a 3-0 run which was capped with a service ace from Grace Hetterscheidt.
  • Another 3-0 run brought NU even closer to the Griffs, 17-14, but Canisius answered with four straight points to take a 21-14 lead.
  • The Purple Eagles went on another 3-0 run but Canisius closed out the set with four straight points to win the set, 25-17.

Second Set

  • The Purple Eagles and the Griffs once again kept things close early in the set, but a 5-0 run from Canisius gave them a 15-7 lead over NU.
  • Canisius dominated the remainder of the set, allowing the Purple Eagles only four more points. The Griffs won the second set, 25-11, to take a 2-0 match lead.

Third Set

  • Niagara took the lead, 10-8, in the third set, but a 4-0 run from the Griffs gave them the lead, 12-10. Four straight errors from Canisius, however, put NU back in the lead, 14-12.
  • The Griffs began to pick up momentum late in the set, going on two separate 4-0 runs. The Griffs won the third set, 25-18, to sweep the match and this season’s Battle of the Bridge series.
