POTSDAM, N.Y. — Emma Ruggiero (Amherst, NY/Sacred Heart) continued her torrid start to the season, scoring a pair of goals to lead visiting Buffalo State to a 3-1 victory over Potsdam today to salvage a weekend split in NEWHL play.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Ruggiero opened the scoring with her fourth goal of the season just under three minutes into the game with assists from Gianna Brigante (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) and Lila Toczek (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint).
  • Potsdam evened the scoring just under two minutes later to even the score.
  • After a scoreless middle period, Ruggiero regained the lead for the Bengals midway through the third period with an unassisted tally for her fifth goal in her first four games this season.  Lauren Madden(Jamestown, NY/Jamestown) and Hailey Tylka (Chicago, IL/Taft) picked up the assists.
  • Cheyenne Matson (Wasilla, AK/Matsu Career & Tech) provided an insurance marker on the power play late in the third period, floating a point shot through a screen into the top of the net.
  • Bri Gawronski (Dunkirk, NY/Mt. Mercy) did the rest for Buffalo State, making 27 saves.
  • Potsdam finished with a 28-25 edge in shots.  The Bengals were 1 for 4 on the power play, and Potsdam was 0 for 7.

  • Stephanie Dunlap scored the lone goal for Potsdam.
