Canisius hockey’s Ian Edmondson named candidate for Senior CLASS Award

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius senior captain Ian Edmondson has been named one of 15 candidates for the 2018-19 Senior CLASS Award, organization officials announced on Tuesday.
 
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character and competition.

A native of Toronto, Edmondson has recorded 24 points (2g, 22a) in 93 career games played at Canisius. He led Canisius defensemen with 12 assists during the 2016-17 season when the program claimed its first Atlantic Hockey regular season title and chipped in 10 points on a goal and nine assists last season.
 
During his sophomore season, Edmondson was part of a Golden Griffins defense that ranked in the top 10 nationally in penalty kill (87.2/3rd), scoring defense (2.18/5th) and goals against (85/6th). He has also shown a willingness to put his body on the line, recording more than 100 blocked shots during his career.
 
In the classroom, Edmondson is a three-time Atlantic Hockey Conference All-Academic Team selection who has been named to the Dean’s List at Canisius College on three occasions, including the spring of 2018. He is on track to receive his undergraduate degree in finance in May 2019.
 
Edmondson is also a valued member of both the Canisus and greater Buffalo communities. He currently serves as the Community Service Officer in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Canisius, helping to organize and seek out community service opportunities for student-athletes to participate in. Edmondson also runs the “Sandwich Ministry,” a program that provides meals to less-fortunate members of the Buffalo community that occurs every Sunday.
 
Edmondson has been a part of the team’s annual Movember campaign in each of the past three seasons, helping organize the team’s overall approach to supporting the men’s health initiative with other men’s athletic programs on campus. During that time frame, the program has raised more than $5,000 for the Movember Foundation.
 
An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities. 
 
The 15 candidates will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February, and those 10 names will be placed on the official ballot. Ballots will be distributed through a nationwide voting system to media, coaches and fans, who will select one candidate who best exemplifies excellence in the four Cs of community, classroom, character and competition.
 
The Senior CLASS Award winner will be announced during the 2019 NCAA Men’s Frozen Four, which will be held at the KeyBank Center in downtown Buffalo, April 11 and 13.
