POTSDAM, N.Y. — Josh Dunne scored two goals to lead Clarkson to a 4-1 victory over Canisius in collegiate men’s ice hockey action Saturday at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
In a non-conference matchup between the two Empire State foes, the Golden Knights improved to 3-2 on the young season with the victory while the Golden Griffins moved to 2-3.
After a scoreless first period, Clarkson struck twice in a 52-second span early in the second to build a 2-0 cushion. Dunne opened the scoring at the 4:23 mark of the middle frame when he jammed home a loose puck for his second of the campaign before Devin Brosseau redirected a pass from Greg Moro into the upper right-hand corner of the net from the middle of the slot on the following shift.
Canisius would get on the board with a power-play tally less than two minutes remaining before the end of the second. Mazza fired a slap shot from the top of the point that hit the right post and trickled across the goal line for his second of the campaign.
Dunne restored the Golden Knights two-goal margin midway through the third period, deflecting a point shot from Moro past Canisius netminder Blake Weyrick. Haralds Egle closed out the scoring with an empty-net tally with 1:15 to play.
Jake Kielly recorded 15 stops between the pipes for the Golden Knights while Weyrick finished with 18 saves in goal for the Griffs.

“Whenever you play on the road, whether it’s a conference game or a non-conference game, they’re tough games and tonight was no exception. I really loved how our guys competed and battled. It wasn’t an up-and-down game. It was a grinding, heavy effort, play inside your guy night. I was happy with our performance. We still need to get better in certain areas, but all-in-all, it was a solid game for us early in the season.
“I thought we were really pushing before they scored their first goal. I thought we were on them really well. It was a little bit of a bad break on their first goal in terms of a puck bounce. Then they get another quick one and I thought we were really resilient after that. Obviously, we get a power-play goal late in the second period to make it a 2-1 game, but the effort that’s required to get calls was what I was really pleased with.”
Game Notes
• Saturday’s contest served as the seventh meeting between Canisius and Clarkson. The Golden Knights have won each of the last three meetings to build a 3-1-3 lead in the all-time series.
• Clarkson held a 22-16 shot advantage in the contest, highlighted by an 11-4 margin in the third period.
• Canisius was 1-for-6 on the power play on Saturday while Clarkson was 0-for-3 with the man advantage.
• The Griffs have scored a power-play goal in four of their five games this season with their man-advantage tally on Saturday.
• With his assist on Mazza’s second-period tally, sophomore Grant Meyer extended his season-long point streak to five games.
• Meyer’s assist also moved him into a tie with senior Dylan McLaughlin atop the team’s scoring chart with six. (1g, 5a).
• Junior Matt Stief was also credited with an assist on Mazza’s tally, giving him four assists on the season.
