NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Purple Eagles downed the Siena Saints, 3-2, on Sunday. Niagara has now won all five of their matches that have gone into five sets this season.
Match Summary
First Set
- The Purple Eagles and the Saint kept things close in the first set. Niagara led, 8-7, before the Saints went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, 11-8.
- The Saints led 15-11, but three straight points from the Purple Eagles left them trailing by only one point, 15-14.
- Niagara and the Saints continued to go back and forth, but the Purple Eagles picked up momentum late in the set, scoring three straight points to close it out and win the first set, 25-22.
Second Set
- Niagara was down by only one point early in the second set, 11-10, but a 4-0 run from the Saints extended their lead, 15-10. Niagara answered with a 3-0 run and trailed by only two, 15-13.
- The Purple Eagles and the Saints once again kept things close in the second set and, despite two more 3-0 runs from NU, the Saints held onto the lead, winning the set 25-23 to tie the match, 1-1.
Third Set
- Niagara got off to a hot start in the third set, scoring five straight points, including two kills from Caroline Leitch, to take a 5-0 lead over Siena.
- The Purple Eagles led, 9-8, and two straight kills from Grace Hetterscheidt extended the lead for Niagara, 11-8. Siena, however, quickly went on a 3-0 run to tie the score, 11-11.
- A 3-0 run from NU late in the set gave the Purple Eagles a one-point lead, 23-22, but the Saints score two straight to take the lead, 24-23.
- Two points from NU put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 25-24, but the Saints went on a 3-0 run to end the set. Siena won the third set, 27-25, to take the lead in the match, 2-1.
Fourth Set
- Niagara and Siena battled back and forth to start the fourth set, but the Purple Eagles went on a 5-0 run to take the lead, 10-6.
- After claiming the lead, the Purple Eagles dominated the remainder of the set and won the fourth set, 25-14, to tie the match, 2-2.
Fifth Set
- The Purple Eagles opened the fifth set on a 5-0 run, including two kills from Hetterscheidt, to take a 5-0 lead over the Saints.
- Another run from NU, including kills from Mary Redl and Cameron Maris, extended the lead, 10-3.
- Kills by Maris and Hetterscheidt capped a 3-0 run late in the set to put the Purple Eagles within one point of the win, 14-6.
- Siena scored two straight points, but a kill from Leitch iced the set, and the match, for the Purple Eagles.
Eagle’s Eye On…
- Jessica Streuer recorded her 11th double-double of the season with 12 digs and a team-high 49 assists.
- Leitch led the team in kills with 14. She also had 15 digs to record a double-double.
- Redl recorded the first double-double of her career with 12 kills and a career-high 17 digs.
- Hetterscheidt added 13 kills and Maris recorded 10 kills, tying her career-high. Hetterscheidt also had 11 digs to record a double-double.
- Redl and Hetterscheidt each had two service aces.
- Maris had three solo blocks to tie a career-high.
- Emillie Wright added 16 digs for the Purple Eagles.
