NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The women’s volleyball team fell to crosstown rival Canisius, 3-0, in the first installment of the Battle of the Bridge on Thursday.
Match Summary
First Set
- Canisius got off to an early start, taking an 8-4 lead over the Purple Eagles. Niagara went on a 3-0 run, including kills from Jaycie Robertsand Grace Hetterscheidt and an ace from Emillie Wright, and trailed by only one, 8-7.
- The Griffs reclaimed their lead, 11-8, but the Purple Eagles went on another 3-0 run, including two kills from Mary Redl and an ace from Roberts, to tie the score, 11-11.
- Canisius took a 22-16 lead but three consecutive points from the Purple Eagles left them trailing by only three points, 22-19. The Griffs, however, scored three straight to close out the set and take a 1-0 match lead.
Second Set
- The Purple Eagles took a 4-2 lead over the Griffs early in the second set. The Griffs, however, quickly took the lead from the Purple Eagles, 6-5.
- Kills from Caroline Leitch and Cameron Maris gave the advantage back to NU, 8-7, but Canisius once again answered quickly, going on a 3-0 run to take a 10-8 lead.
- The Griffs extended their lead, 15-10, midway through the set. A 6-0 run extended Canisius’ lead, 22-12.
- The Griffs held Niagara to only two more points, taking the second set 25-14 and a 2-0 match lead.
Third Set
- Niagara once again took an early 4-2 lead over the Griffs, but Canisius went on a 3-0 run to claim the lead, 5-4.
- The Purple Eagles and Canisius scored back and forth but a 4-0 run from the Griffs put them ahead, 11-7.
- The Griffs extended their lead, 19-11, but a 3-0 run from NU, capped by a kill from Leitch, put the Purple Eagles down by only five, 19-14.
- The Griffs, however, hung onto their lead, taking the set 25-18 to sweep the set.
Eagle’s Eye On…
- Roberts led the team in kills with nine and also added nine digs. She also had a team-high two aces.
- Jessica Streuer recorded her ninth double-double of the season with a team-high 26 assists and a team-best 11 digs.
- Leitch and Maris each had two total blocks.
