JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The Niagara women’s volleyball team extended its win streak to three match with a 3-2 victory over the Saint Peter’s Peacocks on Saturday.

Match Summary
First Set

  • Though Saint Peter’s struck first, the Purple Eagles quickly went on a 5-0 run to take a 5-1 lead over the Peacocks.
  • Niagara led 12-6 before a 3-0 run from the Peacocks left them trailing by only three points, 12-9.
  • A 4-0 run from the Purple Eagles late in the set, including a kill from Caroline Leitch and a kill and an ace from Grace Hetterscheidt, put NU comfortably in the lead, 23-14.
  • Niagara held onto the lead for the remainder of the set, winning the first set 25-16.

Second Set

  • Saint Peter’s took the lead in the second set, going on a 4-0 run to get ahead of the Purple Eagles, 8-4.
  • Saint Peter’s led late in the set, 23-16, but the Purple Eagles scored five straight points to trail by only three, 23-20. The Peacocks, however, scored the next two points to take set two, 25-20, and tie the match, 1-1.

Third Set

  • The third set was a battle between the Purple Eagles and the Peacocks. Saint Peter’s went on an early run to take a 6-1 lead over NU.
  • A 3-0 run from Niagara left the Purple Eagles down by only one point, 8-7, but the Peacocks answered with a 4-0 run to extend their lead, 12-7.
  • Trailing 16-10, the Purple Eagles went on a 5-0, including two kills from Mary Redl and one from Leitch, to once again get within one point of Saint Peter’s, 16-15.
  • The Purple Eagles and the Peacocks were tied late, 25-25.  NU got ahead, 27-26, but Saint Peter’s scored three straight points to take the second set, 29-27, and take a lead in the match, 2-1.

Fourth Set

  • The Purple Eagles led Saint Peter’s, 3-2, before the Peacocks went on a 4-0 run to take the lead, 6-3.
  • Three kills from Leitch and one from Cameron Maris helped make up a 5-0 run that put the Purple Eagles back in the lead, 9-7.
  • Errors from the Peacocks helped set the Purple Eagles on a 5-0 run to extend their lead, 17-9.
  • Niagara held onto its lead for the remainder of the set, winning the fourth set, 25-19, and tying the match, 2-2.

Fifth Set

  • Niagara held the lead for the entirety of the fifth set and won the set, 15-10, to earn a 3-2 match win to sweep the season series with the Peacocks. The Purple Eagles and the Peacocks also went into five sets in their first meeting this season at Niagara; NU also won that match 3-2.


Eagle’s Eye On…

  • Jaycie Roberts recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 13 kills and a career-high 22 digs.
  • Leitch led the Purple Eagles with 15 kills. She also added three total blocks.
  • Jessica Streuer recorded her eighth double-double of the season with 48 assists and 11 digs.
  • Hetterscheidt added 13 kills and Emillie Wright had 13 digs.
  • Redl had a career-high 13 digs and also added eight kills.
