NIAGARA UNIV., N.Y. – The Niagara women’s volleyball team picked up a statement win on Sunday afternoon, defeating the defending MAAC champions, Fairfield, in straight sets.

Match Summary
First Set

  • A 5-0 run from Niagara early in the first set, which included kills from Emillie WrightJaycie Roberts and Caroline Leitch, gave the Purple Eagles a 10-5 lead over the Stags.
  • The Purple Eagles went on a 4-0 run later in the set with kills from Grace Hetterscheidt, Leitch and Jessica Streuer to take a 20-9 lead over Fairfield.
  • Fairfield went on a 5-0 run later in the set left the Stags trailing by eight points, 23-15, but kills from Roberts and Alex Paris iced the 25-15 set one victory for the Purple Eagles.

Second Set

  • Fairfield led 7-5 in the second set but Niagara went on a 4-0 run, including two kills from Roberts, to claim the lead, 9-5.
  • Niagara stayed in control for the remainder of the set, winning the second set 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

Third Set

  • The lead went back and forth early in the third set, but Niagara was able to capitalize on Fairfield errors and led 16-12 midway through the set.
  • Fairfield went on a 3-0 run to come within one point of the lead, 17-16, but a 3-0 run, kicked off by kills from Roberts and Leitch extended NU’s lead, 20-16.
  • The Stags answered with another 3-0 run to once again trail by only one, 20-19, but the Purple Eagles were undaunted. A kill from Leitch and two service aces from Roberts contributed to a 4-0 run, which put Niagara up by 5, 24-19.
  • Fairfield scored once more, but a kill from Paris cemented the Purple Eagles’ 3-0 sweep of the Stags.


Eagle’s Eye On…

  • Roberts recorded her fifth double-double of the season against the Stags. She had 11 kills, which was tied with Leitch for team-most, and 14 digs. Roberts led the team in points with 15.0.
  • Paris, Hetterscheidt and Mary Redl each added five kills for the Purple Eagles.
  • Emillie Wright led the team in digs with 15.
  • Streuer had a team-high 36 assists and also added 10 digs.
  • Redl had a career-high six total blocks. Leitch and Cameron Maris each had five total blocks.
