CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Seniors Jourdan Roemer, Kayla O’Connell, Jen Reininger and junior Riley Lucarelli have been named Canisius women’s lacrosse captains, head coach Allison Daley announced Friday.
“We are fortunate to have exceptional leaders within our program like Jourdan, Jen, Kayla and Riley,” Daley said. “All four young women embody what it means to be a part of the women’s lacrosse program at Canisius.
“Each of these ladies lead with their heart, are exceptional role models for their teammates and are incredible people. They believe in our team and college and will continue to help our program move forward in a positive direction. I am excited to work with them this season on being all we can be.”
Roemer was a captain during the 2018 season, where she helped lead the Golden Griffins to an 11-9 overall record, a 6-2 league mark, a share of the regular season crown and an appearance in the MAAC Championship game.
The Irondequoit, N.Y., native was named MAAC Offensive Player of the Year, All-MAAC First Team, All-ECAC and IWLCA Division I All-Region in 2018. As a junior, Roemer racked up a team-high 84 points on 50 goals and 34 assists. She also had a streak of three consecutive games with at least five points, as well as recording multiple points in 18 of her 20 games played.
Reininger was named Canisius Female Student-Athlete of the Year, MAAC Midfielder of the Year, All-MAAC First Team, All-ECAC and IWLCA Division I All-Region in her second season on Main Street. The midfielder scored a team-high 55 goals and added 10 assists during her 65-point season. Reininger also set a school record with 114 draw controls.
O’Connell was a defensive leader for the Blue and Gold in 2018, starting all 20 games on the back line. As a junior, she tallied a total of 42 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers during the campaign. The Honeoye Falls, N.Y., product, set career-highs in ground balls and draw controls against ACC foe Virginia with six and three, respectively, on March 28.
Lucarelli had a breakout season for the Griffs as a sophomore. The defender picked up 38 ground balls and caused 17 turnovers in her 20 games played on defense. The defender also helped the Blue and Gold offense as she recorded 10 draw controls on the season.
