Rowing at 2018 MAAC Championship
WELLAND, ONTARIO — The Canisius rowing team opens the fall portion of its 2018-19 slate Saturday, as the Golden Griffins take part in the Head of the Welland. The regatta kicks off at 9 a.m., and the Griffs take to the water at 10:55 a.m. in Welland, Ontario.
 
Who’s Coming Back 
• The Blue and Gold are led by captains Sydney Bichsel and Emma Vicaretti. Bichsel returns for her senior season after being a captain for the squad in 2017-18, while Vicaretti is entering her junior season.
• The Griffs will have three All-MAAC selections on the roster, as Bichsel (Second Team), Jessica Fabian (First Team) and Alexandra Heinz (Second Team) look to build off of strong individual 2017-18 campaigns.
• In all, Canisius has 17 letterwinners returning from last season.
 
Fresh Faces
• The freshman class includes four members in the form of coxswain Emma Sabio and rowers Katie KraftBrynn Krolikowski and Allyson Matrassi.
• Kraft, Krolikowski and Sabio are Western New York natives while Matrassi hails from Latham, N.Y.
 
Head of the Welland Notes
• The Head of the Welland – Five Bridges Fall Classic takes place on the Old Welland Canal, known now as the Welland Recreational Waterway.
• This will be the 37th running of the regatta, held by the South Niagara Rowing Club.
• This will be the first time the Golden Griffins have participated in the Head of the Welland.
 
Coach Brace’s Pre-Regatta Comments
“We’re looking forward to experiencing a different race course this Saturday. Welland provides an opportunity for the crews to get a solid row in, work on their individual growth, as well as the full development of the program.”
