Camila Vazquez
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius freshman Camila Vazquez was named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Volleyball Co-Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after she recorded 35 kills and 11 total blocks, earning a selection to the all-tournament team this past weekend at the Delta Hotel by Marriott Kalamazoo Conference Center Tournament.

This marks the first time Vazquez has been honored by the conference for her play on the court. In Canisius’ 3-1 victory over Milwaukee on Friday, the Tampa, Fla., native powered the Blue and Gold with 12 kills and eight total blocks. She added a team-high eight kills against tournament host Western Michigan before racking up a career-high 15 kills versus Loyola Chicago.

“It was a breakthrough weekend for Camila,” head coach Lenika Vazquez said. “She was really deserving of recognition and I am proud of her for her selection.”

The freshman currently sits third on the team through the first three weeks of the season with 73 kills and is tied for the lead on the Golden Griffins with 23 total blocks, sharing the top spot with Preseason All-MAAC Team selection Sara Wesley.

Canisius will open up MAAC play on the road at Marist Sept. 15. The opening serve is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN3. They follow that by travelling to Siena for a 1 p.m. match Sept. 16.
