FREDONIA, N.Y. — Robert Williamson (Fishkill/John Jay) tallied a goal and an assist to lead Buffalo State to a 2-1 victory over Catholic University today in the opening day of the Fredonia Blue Devil Classic.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Buffalo State generated a 9-7 shot advantage in the first half, but neither team could score before the first intermission.
  • The Bengals broke through with a pair of goals less than five minutes apart early in the second half. 
  • Williamson opened the scoring in the 57th minute on a penalty kick inside the left post.
  • Trevor Moreland (Newfane/Newfane) extended the advantage with his first collegiate goal with assists from Williamson and Ali Shawish (Lackawanna/Lackawanna).  Shawish sent a free kick into the box that was headed by Williamson and then headed again by Moreland to the back of the net in the 61st minute.
  • Catholic cut the deficit in half with a marker less than two minutes later, but the Bengals were able to keep the Cardinals at bay the rest of the way.
  • Andreas Queen (Stone Ridge/Rondout Valley) finished with five saves in the win as Buffalo State finished with a 16-14 edge in shot attempts.

  • Philip Meszaros scored for Catholic, and Jack Long made five saves.
