BUFFALO, N.Y. — There’s a scene that can commonly be found in every good superhero movie. It’s just after an ordinary person realizes their extraordinary superpowers. What is the first thing they have to do???
Well, they make their costume, of course!
Whether it’s Wade Wilson on a sewing machine or Peter Parker drawing sketches in a notebook, getting the costume just right is an essential step before any superhero heads off into the night to fight criminals and save the day. And when the Bisons began planning this year’s 4th Annual Superhero Night on Saturday, August 11 presented by NCCC, getting their new costume just right was the top priority.
Luckily for the team, there was a tremendous resource right in their pool of actors at this year’s event. Buffalo-native Brian Platter from the Superhero Alliance of WNY is also a graphic designer for Six Shot Studios and jumped at the opportunity to put his own stamp on this year’s event.
“I’m honored to be a part of such a great event on and off the field. Working with the Bisons has been a pleasure and I appreciate the opportunity they have given me to showcase my design skills,” said Platter.
Platter, who plays the role of the evil ‘Joker’ at the Bisons annual event, looked to the forces of good for the inspiration for this year’s costume. The Bisons will wear ‘Super-Celery’ jerseys, paying tribute to the racing mascot that retired from the WCC Race at the end of last season.
From there, Platter pulled features from the tried and true costumes of the heroes so many of us adore to create this year’s exciting new look.
“The concept for the jersey was to create a design that featured subtle elements from characters portrayed in the story for Superhero Night 4 as well as combining them with the aesthetic of the Celery mascot,” said Platter.
“We’re lucky to have someone as talented and passionate as Brian in the Superhero Alliance. Not only did he create a fitting jersey, but he is able to contribute to all creative elements for our Superhero Night,” said Anthony Sprague, Bisons Assistant GM and executive producer of the Superhero Night show.
All of the ‘Super-Celery’ jerseys worn on Saturday will be autographed by the players after the game. Ten of these jerseys are being auctioned off right now (CLICK HERE), including those to be worn by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Danny Jansen and Jason Leblebijian. The rest of the jerseys will be raffled off at the game with the proceeds of both auction/raffle to benefit the Superhero 5K and Wellness Walk.
Now all that’s left for Platter is to transform back into the Joker and try to defeat Celery and the forces of good at this year’s show.
“Having the opportunity to perform on field in front of thousands of fans can be a little nerve wrecking, but helping bring someone’s favorite character to life is why we do it,” said Platter.
