BUFFALO, N.Y. — Canisius sophomore Matt Genaway posted a four-round score of 296, highlighted by an even-par score of 72 in the third round, to earn a tie for 11th in the field at the 96th annual New York State Men’s Amateur Championship, which concluded Thursday evening at Irondequoit Country Club in Pittsford, N.Y.
Genaway was one of five current or former members of the Canisius golf program in the tournament, which was won by Will Thompson from Rochester, N.Y.
Playing out of Attica Golf Club, Genaway finished in a five-way tie for 11th with his score of 296, which was eight-over par for the 72 holes. The Darien Center, N.Y., native made the cut after posting a two-round score of 147 (73-74). In the third round, his even-par 72 was highlighted by an eagle on the par-4 15th hole to go with birdies on four of his final nine holes. He shot a 77 in the final round, capped with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole.
Former Griff David Berkun placed 33rd in the field, which featured 134 golfers from across New York State. Berkun made the tournament’s cut by shooting 151 (74-77) through two rounds before carding scores of 76 and 78 in the final two rounds.
Canisius juniors Jaret Chipman (154) and David Hanes (157) and sophomore Michael Wells (172) also qualified and played in this year’s New York State Men’s Amateur Championship but failed to make the cut line after two rounds, which was set at nine-over after 36 holes.
Genaway played in nine events for Canisius in 2017-18, his first year with the Golden Griffin golf program. He scored four top-20 finishes in his freshman campaign, capped by an 11th place finish at the 2018 MAAC Golf Championship.
The Canisius golf team will open the fall portion of its 2018-19 schedule Sept. 8-9 when the Blue and Gold travels to take part in the Alex Lagowitz Memorial, a 54-hole event hosted by Colgate at Seven Oaks Golf Club in Hamilton, N.Y.
