CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The 2017-18 season saw 10 Canisius student-athletes earn major awards for their contributions to their Golden Griffin teams. As a part of “Griffin Success Week”, here is a closer look at those 10 honorees:
Fall 2017
Alex Grattarola – Men’s Soccer
• MAAC Defensive Player of the Year
• All-MAAC First Team selection
• Started all 19 games played
• Ranked third on the team in points (16) and goals (7)
• Tied for team lead with three game-winning goals
Winter 2017-18
Jermaine Crumpton – Men’s Basketball
• 2017-18 Associated Press All-America Honorable Mention
• 2017-18 MAAC Co-Player of the Year; All-MAAC First-Team honoree
• Led Canisius in scoring average with 17.1 points per game, which ranked fifth in the MAAC
• His 563 total points scored in 2017-18 rank as the fourth-most among seniors in program history
• Ended his career with 1,587 career points, which is tied for sixth-best in school history
Dylan McLaughlin – Hockey
• 2017-18 Atlantic Hockey Player of the Year
• Hobey Baker Award Top 10 Finalist
• Led Canisius in goals (17), assists (31), points (48) and plus/minus rating (+12)
• Ranked in the top 10 nationally in assists (31/T-8th), assists per game (0.84/8th) and points per game (1.30/7th)
• Ended campaign tied for second in points and second in assists in a season during the program’s Division I era
Takal Molson – Men’s Basketball
• 2017-18 MAAC Rookie of the Year – the fourth in school history and first since 2006-07
• 2017-18 MAAC All-Rookie Team honoree
• Ranked third on the team with his 12.6 points per game, which led all freshmen in the MAAC
• Scored 25 points in his first career game at Buffalo Nov. 11, 2017 – a new program record for points scored by a true freshman in his collegiate debut with the program
• His 417 total points scored in his rookie season are the most for a Canisius freshman since 1981-82
Travis Wright – Men’s Swimming and Diving
• 2017-18 MAAC Diver of the Year
• 2017-18 MAAC 1-meter and 3-meter diving champion
• Set school for both 1-meter and 3-meter competitions
• Qualified for the NCAA Diving Zone championship event for the second-straight year
• First Canisius diver to win six MAAC championships in his career (three 1-meter titles, three 3-meter crowns)
Spring 2018
Connor Kearnan – Men’s Lacrosse
• 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year
• 2018 MAAC Championship Most Valuable Player
• Inside Lacrosse Media All-American Honorable Mention
• Set school and MAAC records for assists in a campaign (52)
• Established league mark and finished second on school’s record book for points (83) in a season
Jen Renninger – Women’s Lacrosse
• 2018 MAAC Midfielder of the Year
• 2018 IWLCA Division I All-Region Second Team
• Led the team in goals (53), draw controls (107), ground balls (63) and caused turnovers (31)
• Her 3.20 ground balls per game ranked 12th in the nation
• Joined the program’s famed 100-career point club during the season, a milestone she reached in just 34 career games
Jourdan Roemer – Women’s Lacrosse
• 2018 MAAC Offensive Player of the Year
• 2018 IWLCA Division I All-Region Second Team
• Scored 50 goals and her 84 points, which ranked 21st in the nation
• Scored multiple goals in 14 games and matched a career-high with five markers in three different contests
• Scored her 100th career goal in a home win over Marist April 11
Tyler Smith – Baseball
• 2018 MAAC Relief Pitcher of the Year
• 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship All-Tournament Team selection
• Led the MAAC with 10 saves
• Recorded an ERA of 0.98, allowing just four earned runs in 36.2 innings of work
• Drafted in the eighth round (241st overall) by the Los Angeles Angels in the 2018 MLB Entry Draft in June
J.P. Stevenson – Baseball
• 2018 MAAC Pitcher of the Year
• 2018 MAAC Baseball Championship Most Valuable Player
• Collegiate Baseball Third Team All-American selection
• American Baseball Coaches Association All-Northeast Region Second Team pick
• Paced the MAAC in wins (10), innings (99.0) and strikeouts (93) and led all conference starters with a 2.73 earned run average.
