NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — Niagara University men’s basketball head coach Chris Casey has added veteran coach Fred Dupree to his staff. Dupree arrives to Monteagle Ridge with 15 years of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I level with stops as an assistant coach at Canisius College, College of Charleston, and Rider University.
“Fred comes to us with quality years of experience as an assistant at the Division I level and we are fortunate to add him to our staff,” Casey said. “Will Lanier did an outstanding job for us and I know Fred will pick right up where Will left off. He will have responsibilities in all areas of the program, with an emphasis on recruiting and on the floor coaching.”
Dupree was most recently on the staff at Canisius, where he worked with the team’s post players, recruiting, scouting, and academic progress. Prior to Canisius, Dupree spent six seasons as an assistant coach at the College of Charleston where he helped the Cougars to four 20-win seasons, a SoCon regular season title (2011), and three postseason tournament berths, including an NIT Quarterfinals appearance in 2011. Dupree was also on the staff when guard Andrew Goudelock became the first Cougar to be drafted into the NBA in more than 14 years when he was selected by the Los Angeles Lakers in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft.
Prior to joining the staff in Charleston, Dupree was an assistant coach for five seasons at Rider University, where he helped the Broncs to back-to-back MAAC regular-season championships in 2002 and 2003. He served as Rider’s recruiting coordinator and played a key role in recruiting Jason Thompson, who was drafted 12th overall by the Sacramento Kings in the 2008 NBA Draft.
“Thank you to Coach Casey and Niagara University for giving me the opportunity to get back into coaching,” Dupree said. “This has been an amazing experience to continue coaching in the WNY community, the city, and in the MAAC conference. I’m excited and cannot wait to get working.”
Dupree, a Brooklyn, N.Y. native, was a four-year letterwinner (1994-98) and a team captain at Canisius and was a member of the 1996 MAAC Championship team.
