TOLEDO, O.H. — The Bisons were defeated by the Mud Hens in extra-innings, 8-7, from Fifth Third Field Tuesday night. Jim Adduci’s RBI-double plated the game-winning run in the 10th inning.
The Herd was up early in the game after a six-run second inning and a one-run third, but Toledo’s comeback was complete after the Mud Hens tied the game in the sixth and eventually won the game on the walk-off double.
In the 10th, the Bisons had a chance to regain the lead after they got pinch runner Ian Parmley to third base but were ultimately unable to bring him home.
After the Mud Hens scored two runs in each of the second and third innings, they came back even further with two outs in the fourth to cut the Buffalo lead to one run. Mike Gerber’s two-RBI single moved the score to 7-6.
In the sixth, Toledo tied the game on a double from Gerber, who homered earlier in the game. He picked up his fourth RBI of the game on the hit.
Buffalo’s biggest inning came in the second when they seemed to have a firm grasp on the lead by taking a 6-0 advantage. The Bisons only needed three hits and benefitted from four walks in the inning. Roemon Fields grounded into a fielder’s choice to plate Rowdy Tellez for the first run of the game. Then, Dwight Smith Jr. broke the inning open on a bases-clearing double to right field for his fourth RBI of the game.
One batter later, Danny Jansen–the International League batting average leader coming into the game–cranked an RBI-double to left field that was inches away from sailing over the fence. Jansen came around to score the sixth run of the inning on a single from Jason Leblebijian. The Bisons scored their seventh run on Gift Ngeope’s sacrifice fly in the third.
All the runs the Bisons scored in the game were against Turley and the Toledo relievers held the Herd scoreless after his exit. Once Turley left the game, the Bisons only mustered one hit in the final four innings of the game and struck out seven times in that stretch.
Connor Fisk provided a bright spot in relief for the Bisons. He tossed three excellent innings and ceded just one hit while striking out four to keep Toledo off the board. He also retired the final six batters he faced and sent the game into extras.
