ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Rochester Plates lost 4-2 to the Syracuse Chiefs Thursday afternoon at Frontier Field. The Pawtucket Red Sox come to town Friday night for a 7:05 p.m. game; 1975 Red Sox World Series hero Bernie Carbo will sign autographs before the game, and Boston All-Star second baseman Dustin Pedroia is expected to play as part of a rehab assignment.
In the top of the first, the Chiefs got an RBI double by Matt Hague for an early 1-0 lead. That was the only initial damage Plates starter Trevor May allowed, as he struck out the next two batters to leave Hague in scoring position.
In his first at bat, Jake Cave extended his hitting streak to six games with a single in the bottom of the first inning off of Chiefs starter Phillips Valdez.
In his second rehab appearance of the season and first with the Plates, May pitched four strong innings, allowing three hits, one run, and striking out five. Through 60 pitches, May tossed 41 for strikes. In relief, the Plates called upon right-hander Zack Littell.
After five innings, the Plates were unable to put any pressure on Valdez. He managed to retire fourteen of seventeen total batters faced, allowing only two hits.
In the top of the seventh inning, the Chiefs added a run on a double by Hunter Jones to go up 2-0. Later in the inning, Syracuse went up 3-0 after Jones scored on an RBI single by Rafael Bautista.
The game was halted in the bottom of the seventh inning in a scary moment, when Chiefs outfielders Jones and Bautista collided trying to catch a ball hit by Brock Stassi. Bautista was taken off the field by ambulance with a possible leg fracture. Jones was able to stay in the game. Stassi was credited with a double, giving the Plates runners at second and third with none out. When play resumed, Willians Astudillo laced a double to right-center to bring the Plates within a run at 3-2.
Littell worked 4.0 innings in relief of May, allowing five hits, two earned runs and a walk. Littell struck out three batters. Jake Reed pitched the ninth inning, allowing one run due to an RBI single by Yadiel Hernandez.
