WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman Brian Higgins (NY-26) attended the 37th Annual National Peace Officers’ Memorial Service in Washington, D.C., where fallen Buffalo Police Officer Craig Lehner was recognized for his sacrifice. Several members of the Buffalo Police Department were also on Capitol Hill for the event.
This ceremony, held during National Police Week (May 13-19), honors law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Officer Lehner’s was among the 199 names read during the Roll Call of Heroes. His name was recently etched onto the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial.
Lehner, a member of the Buffalo Police Department’s underwater recovery team, lost his life during a training exercise on October 13, 2017. He was 34 years old.
Officer Lehner, who served in the Buffalo Police Department for 9 years, was a K-9 officer and an Iraq War veteran, serving as a member of the U.S. Army National Guard’s 105th Military Police Company.
In October, Congressman Higgins paid tribute to Officer Lehner on the Floor of the House of Representatives saying, “Those who knew officer Lehner knew how much he loved his job and the people of Buffalo. Officer Lehner lived a life of service to his country and to his community.”
