CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Canisius softball team saw its 2018 season come to an end on Sunday afternoon, as the Golden Griffins split a MAAC doubleheader with Fairfield at the Demske Sports Complex. Canisius dropped the first game, 3-0 before falling to the Stags 5-4 in the second contest. The Griffs end their season with a record of 12-35 overall to go along with a 8-12 mark in conference play. Fairfield is now 25-24 overall and 15-5 in conference action.
In the first game, Fairfield hurlers Destinee Palloto and Karisa Hughen shut out the Griffs, allowing just two hits each in the contest. The Stags earned the first run of the game in the top-half of the fourth with a two run RBI-single off the bat of Sam Merino. Rachael Sieber helped the effort with a hard hit in the sixth to plate Makenna DiGuilio and secure the win for Fairfield.
Freshman Erin Hufford was the only Griff to record a multi-hit game, while junior Denver Keller and freshmanKara Paradowski each tabbed a base knock for the Griffs. Canisius senior Erika Mackie took the loss in the circle as she allowed three runs, on seven hits, while fanning two.
In the second game, Fairfield took an early 1-0 lead in the first on a solo homerun from Courtney Hankins. Canisius answered with a two run homerun off the bat of sophomore Morgan Altman in the home-half of the same inning. Later in the frame, junior Molly Hennessy hit an RBI-double to score Keller. Canisius added to its lead with sacrifice fly from freshman Lindsi Dennis to plate Hennessy.
The score would remain 4-1 in favor of Canisius until the top-half of the fourth inning, when DiGuilio hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score Kate Robinson. In the sixth inning, Hankins notched her second home run of the game to tie things up, 4-4. Robinson returned to the plate later in that inning to hit an RBI single to score Angelina McGuire and win the game, 5-4.
Erika Mackie tallied a loss in her final game as a Griff, allowing five runs on seven hits while fanning five. With the losses, Mackie finishes with an 8-16 pitching mark on the season. Freshman Emily Nicosa closed out the game for Canisius as she allowed one hit and struck out one.

• Canisius is now 39-35 all-time against Fairfield.
• The Griffs ended the season having played in five games extra-innings games, posting a 2-3 record in those five affairs.
• Altman ended the 2018 season with a team-high 28 RBI.
