UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
BUFFALO, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo softball team (16-31, 7-16 MAC) saw their slim MAC Tournament hopes fade away on Saturday afternoon as they dropped a doubleheader at Nan Harvey Field to Miami (OH). The Bulls fell in the first game by the score of 13-3 and 16-11 in the second game of the day.
The Bulls were able to gain the lead in the bottom of the first inning in game one but couldn’t hold onto the lead. After Leandra Jew popped out to open the bottom of the first, Anna Aguon connected on her first home run of the day to give UB the 1-0 lead.
The RedHawks didn’t let the Bulls get comfortable with the lead however as they were able to score three runs in the top of the second inning and three more in the fourth inning to take the 6-1 lead.
Aguon was able to bring the Bulls within 6-3 in the fifth inning as she launched a two-run home run to left center field to plate Jew.
Miami came up in the sixth and put the game out of reach as they scored four runs to take the 10-3 lead over the home team. The lead was pushed to 13-3 in the top of the seventh inning as the RedHawks plated three more runs to earn the win and clinch a spot in the MAC Tournament.
Aguon led the Bulls lineup going 3-for-3 with two home runs, three RBI and two runs scored while
Game two didn’t start out great for the Bulls as the RedHawks were able to strike for seven runs in the top of the first inning. They then added five runs in the second and another run in the third to take the 13-0 lead into the bottom of the third inning.
Buffalo made a ferocious comeback in the bottom of the third inning as they were able to connect on a season-best 10 runs in the inning. After a pair of walks and a single loaded the bases full of Bulls, senior Danielle Lallos dug in and delivered her first career grand slam to cut the lead to 13-4. Ufuoma Ogagan then singled and Alissa Karjel knocked a two-run homer over the wall in right center. UB loaded the bases once again and Jew was hit by a pitch to score a run and Aguon notched a RBI sacrifice fly to center field. Lallos closed out the scoring in the inning with a RBI single to right center to make it 13-10 in favor of the RedHawks.
After a scoreless top of the fourth inning by Miami, Buffalo got back within 13-11 as Alyssa Cuevas ripped her second home run in as many days over the left center field wall.
In the top of the fifth inning, Miami was able to create a little more breathing room as they connected on a two-run home run and added another run to extend their lead to 16-11.
Unfortunately for the home team, they weren’t able to come up with the tying runs across the final two innings as they were handed the 16-11 defeat in the final regular season game of the season.
Lallos led the way for the Bulls in game two going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a career-high five RBI while Cuevas also connected on a home run and two runs scored in the loss. Karjel finished off her impressive game with a home run and two RBI while Jew, Aguon and Martinez each recorded one RBI.
Jew was able to score two runs in the game as she tied the program record for runs scored in a career with 95. She tied the previous school record held by Holly Luciano since 2014.
Following the games, the Bulls honored their four seniors as part of their Senior Day activities at Nan Harvey Field. Leandra Jew, Danielle Lallos, Taylor Scott and Nicolette Jacobs each played their final game in a Buffalo uniform on Saturday afternoon.
