BUFFALO STATE ATHLETICS
GENESEO, N.Y. — Buffalo State took an early lead, but a four-run third inning put top-seeded host Geneseo ahead and the Knights retired the Bengals’ final 13 batters in order to preserve a 5-2 victory in the opening game of the double-elimination SUNYAC Championships this morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Buffalo State took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Melissa Woods(Lakeview/Frontier) before Geneseo answered with a run to even the score in the bottom of the frame.
- Danielle Szymkowiak (Cheektowaga/Cheektowaga) reached on a strikeout wild pitch to leadoff the third inning, and eventually scored on an RBI double by Nicole Adams (Lockport/Starpoint) to put the Bengals back in front.
- Geneseo opened the last half of the third with four-straight free passes on a pair of hit by pitches and two walks to even the score and then added three more runs on a sacrifice fly and a two-run single to move in front by a 5-2 count.
- Buffalo State would not muster a base runner the rest of the way.
- Marissa Hayes (N. Tonawanda/Niagara-Wheatfield) took the loss, lasting 2 2/3 innings, allowing six hits and five runs with three walks and three hit batters.
- Adams was effective in 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, no-hit relief.
- The Bengals finished with three hits for the game, compared to six by Geneseo.
FOR THE FOES
- Alyssa Persich was 2 for 4 with two RBIs to lead Geneseo.
- Ashlyn Kersch earned the win for the Knights, pitching 5 2/3 innings of relief, allowing 1 hit and one run with five strikeouts.

Buffalo State will face the loser of No. 5 Plattsburgh and No. 2 Cortland in an elimination game today at 3 p.m.
