NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — The Purple Eagles defeated crosstown rival Canisius, 9-5, on Wednesday to earn a win in the annual Battle of the Bridge series.

Game Recap

  • The Purple Eagles got on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Cullen to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffs.
  • Canisius took the lead, 2-1, in the top of the third frame, but the Purple Eagles bounced back quickly. In the bottom of the inning, Owen Dziados singled to left field, scoring Cullen. An RBI single from Langlois put NU back in the lead, 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the fourth, Gallup hit a two-run homer to extend Niagara’s lead, 5-2.
  • Trevor McCauley batted in a run in the bottom of the sixth and then scored on a wild pitch. An RBI double from Langlois and an RBI single from Steven Kokoski gave the Purple Eagles a commanding 9-2 lead over their archrival.
  • Canisius added on three runs in the top of the ninth, but the Purple Eagles remained steady, coming away with the victory to earn the Battle of the Bridge points.


Inside the Numbers

  • Cullen led the Purple Eagles with four hits. He was perfect at the plate (4-for-4) for the fifth time this season.
  • Langlois had three hits, tying his career-high.
  • Langlois and Gallup led the team in RBIs with two each.
  • Gallup had a team-high three runs scored for the Purple Eagles and went 2-for-2 in stolen bases.
  • Alexandre Jones earned the start on the mound, striking out a career-high five batters in 3.0 innings pitched.
  • Alex MacKinnon (1-5) got the win, fanning four in 4.0 innings pitched.
