YOUNGSTOWN, O.H. — The Niagara baseball team fell to the Youngstown State Penguins, 11-5, on a non-conference matchup on Tuesday.

Game Recap

  • The Penguins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead over the Purple Eagles in the bottom of the first with the help of two dingers.
  • In the top of the third, a two RBI single from Battaglia put Niagara on the board and left the Purple Eagles trailing by only one run, 3-2.
  • Youngstown State, however, added on one run in the third and one in the fourth to extend its lead, 5-2.
  • In the top of the fifth inning, Gallup doubled to left center, scoring Darian Blanks. Battaglia picked up two more RBIs, doubling down the left field line to score Gallup and Greg Cullenand tie up the score, 5-5.
  • Despite a strong fifth inning, the Purple Eagles were held scoreless for the remainder of the game and the Penguins earned the 11-5 victory.


Inside the Numbers

  • Battaglia led Niagara in hits with two and also had a team-high four RBIs, tying his career-high.
  • Gallup led the team with a career-high three stolen bases. He also had a team-high two runs scored.
  • Dylan Hillabush started on the mound, fanning three and allowing three earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched. Nigel Stearns (1-1) took the loss. He struck out two and allowed two earned runs in 2.0 innings pitched.
