UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
KENT, O.H. — The University at Buffalo softball team (15-26, 6-11 MAC) dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader against the Kent State Golden Flashes on the road. The Flashes handed Buffalo the 10-2 loss in the first game and the 13-1 defeat in game two. Catrell Robertson closed out her day with her first two home runs of the season in the defeats.
The Buffalo lineup got out to a slow start on Saturday in the first game of the day and the Flashes took advantage. The home team was able to plate two runs in the first inning and added seven more runs across the next two innings to take the dominant 9-0 lead.
UB finally responded with their lone runs of the game in the fourth inning as Danielle Lallos opened the inning with a double to left center field and Robertson dug in and delivered a two-run home run to deep left center field to cut the Kent State lead to 9-2.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth inning, the Flashes were able to end the game in the fifth as Holly Speers connected on a solo home run to center field to give the home team the 10-2 win in five innings.
Robertson finished off the first game going 1-for-2 with her first home run of the season and two RBI while Lallos and Leandra Jew each recorded a hit in the loss.
The second game of the day went a lot like the first as the UB lineup couldn’t produce against the Kent State pitching staff.
The Bulls stranded Anna Aguon on first after a single in the top of the first before the Flashes opened the scoring in the bottom half of the inning as Brenna Brownfield notched a RBI single to give the home team the 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Flashes added a run in the bottom of the third to take the 2-0 lead before they were able to blow the game open in the fourth inning.
Robertson opened the fourth inning with a solo home run to right field but that was all the scoring the Bulls would see as the Flashes plated 11 runs in the bottom of the fourth to put things out of reach for the Bulls. Kent State closed out the sweep in the fifth inning with the 13-1 victory.
Robertson once again provided the pop as she went 1-for-2 with a solo home run while Aguon finished off her game going 2-for-2. Taylor Scott went 1-for-2 in the loss as the UB lineup only produced four hits.
The Bulls will return home on Wednesday afternoon as they welcome Big 4 foe St. Bonaventure to Nan Harvey Field for a non-conference doubleheader. The first game of the afternoon will begin at 3:00 pm followed by the second game about 20 minutes after completion of the first game.
