The Kidney Foundation of Western New York is better able to meet the needs of local patients, thanks to a grant from the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund. The $10,000 grant, awarded in April, will be used to provide medical identification jewelry, nutritional supplements and transportation assistance to kidney disease patients with a demonstrated financial need.
“Kidney disease brings so many challenges to people and families,” said John A. Alduino, executive director of the Kidney Foundation. “These programs directly help those with the greatest needs.”
“The Maria Love Fund is very pleased to be able to assist the Kidney Foundation’s efforts in improving lives in Western New York,” said Nancy B. Stevens, the fund’s executive director.
Medical identification jewelry can provide critical information in the event of a medical emergency. Renal nutritional supplements can help to prevent or treat nutritional deficits for people with impaired kidney function. The transportation assistance program allows dialysis and transplant patients to travel to and from medical appointments and treatment centers, which can be critically important for those who need dialysis. The Kidney Foundation accepts requests for services through patients’ social workers.

About the Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund:
The Maria M. Love Convalescent Fund provides interim financial assistance to promote independence and enhance the quality of life of Erie County residents with medically related conditions who may be temporarily ineligible for aid from traditional sources and to provide additional assistance in the area of basic human needs.
Named in honor of Maria M. Love, a Buffalo social services pioneer, Ms. Love established the first day care center in the United States, and in 1903 organized a group of 31 prominent Buffalo women to raise funds and implement a program of convalescent respite care for mothers and their children.
