POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. — The Niagara softball team split a doubleheader with the Marist Red Foxes on Saturday, improving to 2-2 in conference play.

Game 1: Marist 7, Niagara 0

  • Marist (14-20, 1-1 MAAC) took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second, and did not relinquish control for the remainder of the game. The Red Foxes added on four more runs in the bottom of the sixth to earn the 7-0 shutout victory over the Purple Eagles (9-20, 2-2 MAAC).
  • Kendall Watkins and Jennifer Timm each recorded one hit. Timm’s hit was a double.
  • Sierra Bertrand (4-7) threw the complete game in the circle, fanning three batters.


Game 2: Niagara 6, Marist 5

  • The Purple Eagles started off game two strong, with solo homeruns from Kelsey Harrigan and Watkins in the top of the first to give Niagara the 2-0 lead.
  • In the top of the second, Harrigan doubled to left center, scoring Sarah Trifoso and Brianna Clark and extend the Purple Eagles’ lead, 4-0.
  • A two-run homer from Marist in the bottom of the second inning halved NU’s lead, 4-2. A three-run homerun from the Red Foxes in the bottom of the third gave them the 5-4 lead over the Purple Eagles.
  • Harrigan continued her strong game with a two RBI single in the top of the fourth to put Niagara back on top, 6-5.
  • The Purple Eagles held Marist scoreless for the remainder of the game to earn the win.
  • Harrigan led the Purple Eagles with a career-high three hits and a career-high five RBIs.
  • Taylor Moody added two hits for the Purple and White.
  • Jennifer Szilagyi (1-4) earned the win in the circle, striking out three batters and scattering only three hits in 3.0 innings of work. Emily Johnston picked up her second save of the season, striking out two and allowing only one hit in 1.0 innings pitched.
