CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS


HAMDEN, C.T. — The Canisius softball team opened the MAAC portion of its 2018 schedule with a pair of road losses on Saturday, falling to Quinnipiac by scores of 10-2 in five innings in the first game and 6-2 in the nightcap of the league twinbill. The wins move the Bobcats to 14-17 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-24 on the season, and 0-2 in league play.

GAME ONE
Quinnipiac’s Rebecca Drake drove in a pair runs and senior pitcher Casey Herzon earned her MAAC leading 11th win in the circle as the host Bobcats scored a 10-2 run in five innings in the first game of the league doubleheader. Herzog helped her own cause at the dish, as she went 3-for-3, highlighted by a two-run homer.

Canisius trailed 5-0 after two innings before sophomore Ashley Barnett scored on a fielder’s choice in the third. The Bobcats scored five more runs in the fourth to make the score 10-1. Barnett scored the Griffs’ second run in the top-half of the fifth on a fielder’s choice by freshman Kara Paradowski.

Freshman starter Emily Nicosia took the loss in the circle for Canisius after she allowed 10 runs, seven earned, on 10 hits. She also fanned four batters.

Freshman Lindsi Dennis had two hits in the loss for Canisius, while sophomore Morgan Altman and Barnett each had a pair of hits for the Blue and Gold.

GAME TWO
In the second game of the day, Canisius jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI-double by junior Denver Keller, but the Bobcats scored twice in the third and then added four runs in the fourth en route to the 6-2 victory.
 
In the fifth inning, Barnett singled to score Paradowski. Paradowski ended the day by going 2-for-4 with a run scored, while Barnett went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a walk.

Canisius senior Erika Mackie took the loss after she allowed six runs on eight hits to go with two strikeouts.

GAME NOTES
• The doubleheader with Quinnipiac marked the 10th and 11th all-time meetings between the two schools. Canisius leads the series, 7-4.
• Paradowski was the only Griff to have a multi-hit game in the second match-up.
• Saturday was the 111th career appearance in the circle for Mackie, which ranks fourth in school history.

The Griffs will return to conference play Sunday, April 8, when the team travels to Marist. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
