The Niagara Purple Eagles men’s and women’s tennis teams conclude non-conference play for the season when they travel downstate to battle the St. Bonaventure on Friday, with the men slated to start play at 10:00 a.m. and the women at 2:00 p.m. They will follow up play on Saturday as they return to action against the Fairfield Stags, with the women scheduled to start at 3:45 p.m. and the men starting at 6:00 p.m.
First Serve (Men)
- After opening MAAC play with a 4-3 win over the Siena Saints, the Purple Eagles dropped a pair of matches to conference foes Quinnipiac and Monmouth.
- Finnbar Adams and Eduardo Villalpando are 2-0 as a duo.
- Taylan Ozdemir has a team-best 14 singles wins, six of which stem from first singles.
- Adams and Ozdemir lead the team in doubles victories with nine.
Across the Net – St. Bonaventure Bonnies
- The Bonnies, who also defeated Siena this season back on March 18, come into the match dropping nine of their last 10 matches.
- The Bonnies are 3-14 this season, their lone conference win so far this season coming on Feb. 17 against Fordham, 4-3.
- A pair of St. Bonaventure players are in double figures for singles wins this season – Hector Martinez (10-15) and Indra Patwardhan (10-11).
- The tandem of Victor Blanco and Lukas Linden Malberg have picked up a team-leading five wins in doubles play (5-6), while Guillermo Garcia and Ante Zovko are 4-0 in doubles play, including 2-0 at second doubles.
Across the Net – Fairfield Stags
- The Stags, who defeated St. Bonaventure back on March 4 (5-2), come into the match falling in each of their last five matches. Fairfield’s lone win in the MAAC this season came back on Oct. 4, when they defeated the Rider Broncs, 7-0.
- Two members lead the team with nine wins apiece in singles competition – Lewis Edwards and Jeffrey Rodgers. Edwards (9-11) has gone 4-2 at second singles, while Rodgers (9-13) has been 5-4 at third singles so far this season. Edwards and Rogers also hold a 6-5 record in doubles when playing when each other.
- Anthony Caputo and Tyler Shibes lead doubles play for the Stags with an 8-6 record, while Ethan Ammon and Anthony Caputo are 5-4 together.
First Serve (Women)
- The Purple Eagles are coming off a 7-0 victory over Monmouth last weekend, their first shutout in conference play since defeating Saint Peter’s by the same score on April 10, 2016.
- Andreea Peteu leads the team with 10 singles wins, six in second singles and a 2-1 record in third singles.
- Shannon Wong has a 3-2 record in three singles while tying Peteu with a 2-1 conference record.
- Ali Hutchinson and Peteu lead the way for Niagara with a 5-3 doubles record and a 3-2 dual doubles record.
Hutchinson Named MAAC Player of the Week
- Ali Hutchinson has been named MAAC Women’s Tennis Player of the Week announced on Wednesday.
- Hutchinson went unbeaten in singles and doubles matches as Niagara split a pair of matches to Binghamton and Monmouth last week.
Across the Net – St. Bonaventure Bonnies
- St. Bonaventure comes in losing their 10 consecutive matches, with their lone victory coming against Slippery Rock on Feb. 10.
- Gabrielle Bowe (7-15) has a team-best seven singles victories this season. Bowe and Kahlei Reisinger are 10-9 in doubles play, including 6-6 at first doubles.
Across the Net – Fairfield Stags
- After being shut out in their last four consecutive matches, the Stags women’s team earned a 4-3 victory over Wagner back on March 23.
- Similar to the men, the women’s team’s lone win in MAAC play this season also came against Rider back on Oct. 4, 7-0.
- Jessica Pil (10-8) leads the team in singles win with 10 this season, including a 6-4 dual mark.
- Prior to Fairfield’s victory in the series last season, Niagara had won the previous two matchups by a combined score of 11-3.
