UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS

BOWLING GREEN, O.H. — The University at Buffalo women’s tennis team won their eighth straight match and improved to 4-0 in league play with a 7-0 sweep of Bowling Green on Sunday afternoon.  The Falcons entered the match also undefeated in league play, but fell to a red-hot UB squad.  With the win, the Bulls improve to 11-3 on the year overall.
The Bulls opened with two of the three wins at doubles, scoring victories at two and three.  Senior Tanja Stojanovska and sophomore Anna Savchenko won at two, 6-4, while sophomore Emel Abibula and junior Arianna Paules Aldrey won at third doubles, 6-2.
Buffalo went on to win all six matches at singles, including three of those in straight sets.  Stojanovska won in straight sets at second singles, 6-4, 6-3, while junior Sanjana Sudhir won at fifth singles, 7-5, 6-3.  Aldrey also won in straight sets at six with an easy 6-3, 6-1 victory.
The Bulls claimed the other three sets in a third set.  Junior Chantal Martinez Blanco dropped her opening set at first singles, but came back to win, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.  Senior Lolade Ogungbesan also dropped her opening set, but she came back to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3.  Abibula swept her opening set 6-0 at four, but she then dropped the second set 6-1 before coming back to win the third set, 6-2.
The victory capped off a week that saw the Bulls win 6-1 at Miami on Friday afternoon.  Over the course of the weekend, Buffalo went on to win all 12 of their matches played in singles.
“With all the adversity we faced today and to defeat a really strong team on the road like Bowling Green says so much about this team and their unwavering belief in what we are trying to accomplish as a program,” said head coach Kristen Maines.  “I am so proud of the strides we took this weekend both today and on Friday and I can’t wait to return to Buffalo for matches next weekend.”
The Bulls return to Western New York this Friday when they host Northern Illinois at Miller Tennis Center at 12pm.  It will be the front end of a doubleheader with the UB men’s tennis team, who will compete following the conclusion of the women’s match.
