GAME RECAP
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. — Senior Jen Reininger tallied the go-ahead goal with 3:31 remaining in the second overtime period to lift the Canisius women’s lacrosse program over Iona, 10-9 in New Rochelle, N.Y. With the win the Golden Griffins improved to 5-5 overall and 2-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, while Iona dropped to 5-6 and 0-2 in conference action.
The Griffs used a four-goal run beginning at the 13:00 minute mark in the second half to help erase the Iona lead and force the extra time.
Junior Jourdan Roemer got the run started tallying her 24th of the season on a free position, before sophomoreBryar Cummings and Reininger followed suit to cut the Iona lead to one.
Roemer capped the streak and tied things up with 3:20 left in regulation, to tie the game up for the first time since the game began.
Senior goalie Rebbeca VanLaeken was big down the stretch for the Blue and Gold as she recorded five saves between the two overtime periods to keep Canisius in the contest.
Roemer recorded a season-best six points in the win, notching five goals and one assist. Her lone helper came on the overtime go-ahead goal.
Reininger finished the game with four goals, while Cummings recorded a goal and Lauren Smolenksy notched an assist.
Iona’s offense was spread around with three players finishing with three points. Christine Gironda, Katelyn Noschese and Jenna Tolzmann all tallied two goals and one assist. Emma Hager also recorded a pair of markers in the loss.
VanLaeken earned her fifth win of the season, tallying 16 saves and allowing nine goals, while the Gael’s Shannon McCaffery made 11 saves and allowed 10 goals in the loss.
Iona outshot the Griffs 34-29 for the game, while the Blue and Gold controlled the draw circle, outdrawing the Gaels 15-7.
The free-position proved to be a key for Canisius, as the team was 5-of-12 off free position chances. Iona managed to cash in just one free position chance during the contest.

“I am proud of our team and their efforts today. We battled extremely hard to come back from behind and win in overtime. We showed a lot of grit and determination on the field today and believed in each other and our systems. Today was a total team effort. This is a special team and one that I am proud to coach.”
GAME NOTES
• Canisius improved to 14-0 all-time against Iona.
• The Blue and Gold have now won 26-straight MAAC regular season games.
• Roemer and Reininger both extended their point-streaks to 39 and 30, respectively.
• VanLaeken recorded over 10 saves for eighth time this season, recording 16 in the game.
• Roemer’s six-point game is the fifth time this season she’s recorded over five points in a game and it’s the 14th time in her career.
• Roemer and Reininger also tallied hat tricks for the fifth an sixth times this season, respectively.
• Canisius is now 2-1 in overtime games in 2018.
• The Blue and Gold are also 4-1 in contests decided by one goal.
UP NEXT
Canisius will next be in action on Wednesday April 4, when the Griffs take on Siena in Loudonville, N.Y. Game time is set for a 4 p.m. start time. Following that contest Canisius will return home to face the Monmouth Hawks on Sunday April 8.
