FAIRFIELD, C.T. — The Niagara baseball team opened MAAC play with a 13-8 victory over the Fairfield Stags on Friday.

Game Recap

  • The Stags got on the board first, taking a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, but the Purple Eagles answered quickly with a dominant second inning. With bases loaded, Wyatt Olson singled through the left side, scoring Peter Battaglia. Tevlin then doubled to right field, scoring Owen Dziados and Trevor McCauley. An RBI single from Gabriele and a two RBI double from Benny Serrano put NU up, 6-2. Three more scores in the top of the second, including a solo homerun from McCauley, have the Purple Eagles a 9-2 lead over Fairfield.
  • In the top of the fourth, an RBI single from Dziados extended the Purple Eagles’ lead, 10-2.
  • Niagara took advantage of Fairfield errors in the top of the fifth, scoring twice to take a 10-run lead, 12-2.
  • Fairfield scored four runs in the fifth and one run in the sixth and the seventh to cut Niagara’s lead, 12-8.
  • Niagara added on one more run in the top of the ninth and came away with the 13-8 victory.

  • Gabriele led Niagara with three hits.
  • Serrano, Olson and Tevlin each had a team-best two RBIs.
  • Gabriele, Battaglia, McCauley and Julian Gallup each had two runs scored.
  • Jackson Jones earned the start on the mound, fanning five in 4.1 innings pitched. Alexandre Jones (2-1) earned the win.
