UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO ATHLETICS
WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. — The University at Buffalo men’s tennis team snapped their three-match losing skid with a dominating 4-0 victory over Monmouth on Saturday afternoon at the Miller Tennis Center. The Bulls improve to 8-8 with the win.
Due to Monmouth playing another match on Saturday evening, the two teams chose to play doubles second only if it was needed to decide the match. However, the Bulls won four of the six singles matches to take the contest.
Junior Ethan Nittolo won at second singles, 6-4, 7-5, while Petr Vodak won at third singles, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Vidit Vaghela continued his strong play with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 win at four and freshman Matthew Johnson won easily at six, 6-0, 6-3.
The Bulls also won first sets at one and five when the match was halted. Sophomore Hao Sheng Koay won his first set at one, 7-6 and freshman Nickolas Friskwon his first 7-6, but was in a third set when the match was stopped.
“I am truly proud of our team today,” said head coach Lee Nickell. “We have traveled an enormous amount these past three weeks, and have faced some serious opponents. Today we beat a very good Monmouth team who were the reigning MAAC champions, and we did it banged up. Our goal is to get healthy and throw everything we have into these last three weeks!”
The Bulls return to MAC play on Friday afternoon when they host Binghamton at Miller Tennis Center at 4:00 pm in the second end of a doubleheader with the UB women.
