ALBANY — Retail Council of New York State President and CEO Ted Potrikus today issued the following statement supporting the Executive Budget’s ‘Internet Fairness’ provision:
New York merchants large and small applaud Governor Cuomo for including the ‘Marketplace Provider’ sales tax fairness initiative in this year’s budget.
It’s not a new tax. It’s not a tax on the Internet. No mom-and-pop-shop, no individual seller on an auction site, and no struggling start-up will have to lift a finger to comply.
This proposal is good for New York business.
The measure simply applies to Internet marketplace providers pushing more than $100 million in annual sales the same rules that apply, beginning with dollar one, to every Main Street merchant and to every brick-and-mortar consignment shop in New York State.
The Governor’s proposal is pro-Main Street, pro-business, pro-local government, and pro-fairness. We look forward to every local government and local chamber of commerce across the state joining us to support this proposal as budget talks continue.
