STAFF REPORTS

The price of gasoline in Rochester and Buffalo inched higher in the past week, while national prices are up four cents, driven by higher demand.

AAA of Western and Central New York reports that gasoline in Buffalo is now $2.63 per gallon, while Rochester gas prices average $2.62 per gallon.

Today’s national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.53, which is up four cents from one week ago. One year ago, the price was $2.34. The New York State average is $2.67, no change from last week. A year ago, the NYS average was $2.54.

After the national average held steady for the first 10 days of 2018, it began to climb when the Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) petroleum report showed that gasoline demand increased. It rose by 164,000 b/d (barrels per day), hitting 8.8 million b/d. When compared to the first week of 2017, the 2018 level was 344,000 b/d higher. If demand continues to climb, drivers are likely to see pump prices continue to increase.

Despite slightly higher prices, AAA recommends that drivers keep a full tank of gas in their vehicles during cold winter weather. Drivers should also ensure that their windshield washer fluid is full before they hit the road.
