CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

The Canisius women’s basketball team was outscored 17-7 in the first quarter against Rider on Sunday and was unable to overcome the deficit, falling to the Broncs 70-54, in Lawrenceville, N.J. With the loss the Golden Griffins dropped to 3-12 overall and 1-3 in MAAC play, while Rider improved to 5-10 overall and 2-2 in conference action.

The Blue and Gold bounced back in the second frame, atoning for just three made baskets in the first quarter, going six-of-11 in the second frame. Rider followed suit however, posting a game-high 24 points in the second frame, to take a 41-22 lead into halftime.

The Griffs buckled down in the second half, using a 19-9 advantage in the fourth quarter to try and claw back into the game but it wasn’t enough.

Turnovers were once again a concern for Canisius, as the Broncs scored 20 points off 19 Canisius turnovers.

Sara Hinriksdottir paced the team with 17 points, while the Griffs secondary scoring was unable to buoy the offensive attack, as Anndea Ziegler was the next highest scorer with seven points.

Maria Welch had a jack-of-all-trades type of day, scoring six points and posting five rebounds and four assists.

Rider guard Lexi Posset paced the team with 27 points, while Stella Johnson also hit double-figures with 12 points.

The Broncs narrowly won the battle of the glass, taking down 32 boards and the Griffs tallied 29. While Canisius turned it over 19 times, Rider gave it away 15 times but Canisius scored just seven points off turnovers.

Canisius now comes home for a pair of home contests in a busy week at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Blue and Gold host Manhattan on Thursday and Siena on Saturday. Game times are set for 7 p.m. and 2 p.m., respectively.
