Canisius wraps up non-conference play this weekend when it faces ECAC Hockey opponent St. Lawrence in a two-game series.
Puck drop for both games of the series is set for 7 p.m. at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y.
Scouting Canisius
• The Golden Griffins (10-7-1) head into the weekend series at St. Lawrence looking to get back in the win column after opening their current four-game trip with setbacks at No. 5 Cornell (Dec. 30) and No. 3 Clarkson (Jan. 2).
• Junior Dylan McLaughlin is tied for the lead in the Atlantic Hockey Conference scoring race with 27 points (12g, 15a). McLaughlin, who ranks second in the nation in points per game (1.59), has recorded multiple points in nine of 17 games played this season.
• Senior Ryan Schmelzer ranks second on the team in goals (9), assists (12) and points (21). Schmelzer sits just three points away from becoming the 11th player in the Division I era of the program (since 1998-99) to reach the 100-point plateau for his career.
• Sophomore Nick Hutchison is third on the team in scoring with 17 points (9g, 8a). Hutchison is tied for the national lead with four game-winning goals this season.
• Sophomore goaltender Daniel Urbani has started the last 10 games between the pipes for Canisius, recording a 2.89 goals against average and a .912 save percentage in that span.
• The power play continues to be effective as the Griffs are 19-of-75 (.253) with the man advantage thus far this season, ranking seventh nationally in that category. Canisius has recorded a power-play goal in 14 of 18 games played in 2017-18.
• Canisius heads into the weekend series with St. Lawrence 11th in the nation in scoring offense, averaging 3.39 goals per game. The Griffs have recorded two or more goals in 15 of 18 games played this season.
No. 3 Clarkson Defeats Canisius in Tuesday Tilt
• Kevin Charyszyn tallied two goals and Jake Kielly recorded his NCAA-leading sixth shutout of the season to lead No. 3 Clarkson to a 4-0 victory over Canisius Jan. 2 at Cheel Arena in Potsdam, N.Y.
• Following a scoreless first period, Clarkson used a short-handed goal from Nico Sturm and an even-strength tally from Charyszyn to build a 2-0 cushion.
• A power-play goal from Terrance Amorosa and a second tally from Charyszyn in the third closed out the scoring.
• Canisius slipped to 3-4 versus nationally-ranked competition in 2017-18 with the setback to Clarkson. Three of those four losses have come to teams ranked in the top 5.
• The Griffs were held without a power play goal for just the fourth time in 18 games in 2017-18 as they were 0-of-4 with the man advantage.
• Canisius was held off the scoreboard for the first time during the 2017-18 season and the first time since a 3-0 shutout at Holy Cross on Dec. 30, 2016 (38 games).
• The 12 shots taken by Canisius were a season-low, surpassing their previous season low of 21, set against Mercyhurst on Nov. 11.
• Sophomore Daniel Urbani turned aside 29 shots between the pipes for the Golden Griffins.
Scouting St. Lawrence
• The Saints (3-14-1) head into their final non-conference games of the 2017-18 season looking to build upon their victories over host Vermont (3-2) and UMass Lowell (3-0) last weekend at the Catamount Cup.
• Junior Jacob Pritchard paces the St. Lawrence attack with eight goals and 15 points while senior Joe Sullivan ranks second in both categories (7g, 11pts).
• Senior Nolan Gluchowski leads the Saints with nine assists and also paces the squad with 53 shots on goal.
• Junior Arthur Brey and sophomore Daniel Mannella have split time between the pipes for SLU this season after the departure of two-time All-American goaltender Kyle Hayton. Mannella was named the ECAC’s Goaltender of the Week after making 71 saves in the Saints’ wins over the Catamounts and River Hawks.
Canisius-St. Lawrence Series Notes
• Canisius and St. Lawrence will meet for the second straight season after the two programs met for the first time in a two-game series last January at HARBORCENTER.
• The teams played to a 3-3 draw in the series opener on Jan. 6 before St. Lawrence recorded a 2-1 victory in the series finale the following evening.
2017 a Year to Remember for McLaughlin
• The 2017 calendar year was certainly one to remember for junior forward Dylan McLaughlin.
• According to research conducted by CollegeHockeyInc., McLaughlin finished the year tied for fifth among all Division I players in both goals (22) and points (51) tallied in games played during 2017.
• Among Atlantic Hockey Conference players, McLaughlin lead the circuit in goals and was tied with Robert Morris’ Brady Ferguson in points in 2017.
