ROCHESTER — Jason Wheeler turned in seven shutout innings, and a four-run second inning helped the Rochester Red Wings beat the Durham Bulls 4-0 Tuesday night at Frontier Field. The series continues Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m., another $1 Wednesday with $1 Zweigle’s hot dogs, peanuts, chips, and Cracker Jack.
In the bottom of the second, ByungHo Park and Matt Hague got the inning rolling with back to back singles off of Jose De Leon. Two batters later, J.B. Shuck doubled in both Park and Hague to give the Wings a 2-0 lead early. After Shuck got to third on a wild pitch, Engelb Vielma knocked a double to bring home Shuck to make it 3-0 Red Wings. Still in the second inning, Zack Granite extended his hit streak to 11 games and also brought Vielma home on a RBI single making it 4-0 to conclude the second inning.
After Wheeler allowed two hits in the first inning, he quickly settled down and retired nine of the next 10 batters that he faced, striking five of them out in the process. Wheeler continued to show dominance all the way through the seventh inning tallying his ninth strikeout of the game still without allowing a run to cross home maintaining the Red Wings 4-0 lead over the Bulls through seven innings
Durham started the top of the 8th inning with a single and a double off of Wheeler, which would bring his brilliant night to a close. Wheeler finished with 7.0 innings pitched, allowing five hits and no runs without a walk. Wheeler struck out nine, and threw 99 pitches – 61 for strikes.
With Trevor Hildenberger out of the bullpen in relief, a line drive double play and a foul pop ended the Bulls’ eighth inning scoring threat.
The Red Wings out-hit the Bulls 9-6; Durham came into the game leading the league in total runs and hits.
