CANISIUS COLLEGE ATHLETICS

The Canisius outdoor track team competed in their final team event of the season Saturday afternoon at the Cardinal Last Chance Invite from Rochester, gaining two first place finishes for the day.

Senior Xavier Sauvageau ran to a first-place finish in the 1500-meter event in a time of 3:57.62, while freshman teammate Donny Glavin placed eighth in the event in 4:14.62.

Sophomore Josh Sopchak became the second Griff to place first for the day, winning the 5K event with a time of 15:22.24. Sophomore Austin Oetinger placed second in the event at 15:33.53, while freshman Nicholas Neamtu (15:43.72) and senior Arrane Paige-Rispoli (16:21.29) placed third and fifth respectively in the 5K race.

Also running on the men’s side was freshman Nicholas Spinosa who placed seventh in the 800 meter event in 1:59.84.

The Blue and Gold had two runners compete on the women’s side, freshman Jacklyn Wallace who had an eighth-place finish in the 800-meter event (2:38.56) and junior Mary Manzari who completed the 5K event in 20:05.24.

Head Coach Nate Huckle’s Comments“The last chance meet is always a great opportunity for our seniors and some younger runners to give it one more shot, to end the season or their career with a personal best. It worked out well for us again this year, as we hit personal records in the 5k and Xavier bettered his mark in the 1500 meter.”
“Overall, this was an outstanding semester of track competition. We started in January, so it was a long push through May, but our student athletes progressed well along the way and should return ready for another strong cross country season in the fall.”

Up NextAlthough the Griffs came to the conclusion of team play Saturday afternoon, senior Cooper Roach will compete individually at the NCAA Preliminaries to be held in Lexington, Ky on Friday May 26. Roach set a school record in the 5K steeplechase event Friday evening at the IC4A Championship, becoming the first ever Canisius track runner to advance to NCAA Championship competition.
