BUFFALO — University at Buffalo wrestling head coach John Stutzman has assembled another impressive recruiting class – a common theme in recent years. The 10-member class is comprised of wrestlers who have made 25 state appearances, have won 16 state medals and four state championships.
“I think we have a pretty good class,” Stutzman said. “Coach Fetchko did a good job assembling a potential Top 25 class – especially with two nationally-ranked guys. We’re excited to get these guys in here and start training.”
Here is a breakdown of the class.

Matt Caccamise wrestled for Wayne High School in Ontario, NY. The 2016 New York State Champion at 113 lbs., he is projected to wrestle at 125 lbs. for the Bulls. Caccamise was a four-time league champion and two-time state qualifier. He went 46-3 his senior season. An All-Greater Rochester team selection, Caccamise took first place at the 2016 NYS USAW Freestyle Championships.

Corey Guinta wrestled at Webster High School in Rochester, NY. He was a New York State Qualifier in 2017 at 138 lbs. Guinta was named All-County Division I Honorable Mention in 2016.
Tanner LaPiene, from Heuvelton High School in Ogdensburg, NY, went 38-5 his senior season at 138 lbs. and is the winningest wrestler in his school’s history with 178 wins. He was a five-time Section 10 Division II Champion and advanced to the New York State Championships four times, finishing fourth in 2013. LaPiene was also a four-time conference All-Academic selection.

Ryan Juarez-Robertson is from New Castle, DE and wrestled at William Penn High School. Juarez-Robertson was a four-time state qualifier, placing fourth as a sophomore and fifth as a junior. He was a two-time conference champion and finished his senior season with a 30-6 record.

Nick Palumbo wrestled at 145 lbs. at Lenape Valley High School in New Jersey. He was the New Jersey state champion in 2017 after finishing third in the state in 2016. Palumbo finished his career as the 18th ranked wrestler in the nation. He went a perfect 46-0 as a senior and finished his four-year career 135-27 – the most wins in his school’s history. He also has a strong national resume, placing third at the NHSCA Nationals in 2016 and third at the Junior Nationals in 2015.

Noah Grover hails from Warsaw, NY where he wrestled at Warsaw High School. He was the New York State Champion at 160 lbs. in 2017 and finished the season 48-1. He was named All-Greater Rochester and a Livingston County All-Star in 2016 and 2017. Helped lead the Tigers to dual meet state titles in 2014, 2015 and 2016.

Jake Lanning hails from Pontiac High School in Illinois where he wrestled at 170 lbs. He won the Class 2A State Championship in 2017 and finished the season with a 44-0 record and ranked 18th in the nation. Lanning was a three-time state placer, also finishing third in 2015 and sixth in 2016. He posted a school-record 32 pins his senior year and during the regular season not a single opponent lasted the full six minutes. He finished his career with a record of 163-22. Lanning also took first place at the 2014 Illinois Freestyle State Championships. In 2012, he finished second at the World of Wrestling Tulsa Nationals in Oklahoma.
Jacob Schmeader is a local product from Hamburg High School. A two-time Section 6 Champion, Schmeader finished fifth in New York State in 2017 and sixth in 2016.

Kyle Davis hails from Beacon, NY where he wrestled at Beacon High School. A two-time state placer, Davis finished second in school history with 163 wins, including a 50-4 record his senior season. He placed fourth in New York State in 2017. He was named All-State, All-Section and All-League and helped lead the Bulldogs to a Section 1 Division Title.

Sam Schuyler wrestled at Kings Park High School in Kings Park, NY. He was a two-time state qualifier and finished third in New York State in 2017. He went 41-1 his senior season en route to a league championship. Schuyler placed fourth at the 2017 NHSCA Senior Nationals.
