BUFFALO — The University at Buffalo softball team hit a pair of solo home runs on Wednesday in very different ways, but the two solo shots were enough to lead the Bulls to a 2-1 victory over Niagara.
Junior Charlotte Miller was solid again in the circle for the Bulls as she scattered four hits in the complete-game performance. The Bulls got on the board in the bottom of the second on their first of two home runs as freshman Jenelle Martinez sent one over the left field fence, for her second home run of the season.
Buffalo continued to hold on to the lead until the fifth when Niagara scored a run to tie it up. However, the game wasn’t tied long as freshman Jessica Goldyn stepped to the plate to lead off the bottom of the fifth. She sent a shot down the left field line, which got passed the outstretched dive of the Niagara left fielder and rolled to the corner. Goldyn, one of the quickest Bulls on the team, was already rounding third base before the ball was even played, scoring easily on a stand up inside the park home run.
The inside the park home run was the first by a UB player since April 18, 2012 when Karly Nevez hit one, which was also against the Purple Eagles.
Niagara was able to get a one out double in the seventh, but Miller got a pair of ground outs to end the game.
Goldyn went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a stolen base, which was her 18th of the season, putting her in a tie for third place all-time in a single season in UB’s Division I history.
Miller picked up the win, her fourth of the season. She struck out 10 Niagara batters in 7.0 innings of work, while allowing just one unearned run. In addition to Goldyn’s two hits, Martinez had one as well Danielle Lallos and Catrell Robertson.
It was the first time this season that the Bulls had a multiple home runs in the same game.
The Bulls are scheduled to close out the regular season this weekend when the host Ohio for a three-game series. First game is set for Friday at 3pm.
