BUFFALO — Junior right-handed pitcher Shawn Dubin was named Mid-American Conference East division Pitcher of the Week for the first time in his UB career on Monday morning, as announced by the conference office. This marks the second UB pitcher this season to earn the weekly recognition, joining Brent Cleland.
Dubin put together a stellar outing on Saturday afternoon for the Bulls as he collected his team-leading fourth win of the season in UB’s 5-2 win over Eastern Michigan. The junior went 7.0 innings while allowing just four hits, one unearned run and struck out a career-high nine batters. The nine strikeouts were the most by a Buffalo pitcher this season and most since Brent Cleland struck out 12 Kent State batters on May 1, 2015.
Dubin retired eight consecutive batters after allowing a single in the first inning and then closed out his day retiring seven straight Eagles as he notched his career-best fourth win. Of his career-high nine strikeouts, seven were swinging strikeouts for the Eagles on the day.
On the year, Dubin has shown flashes of greatness as he owns a 4-2 record to go along with a 5.67 ERA while striking out a team-best 50 batters in 54 innings of work. The Allegany, NY native has recorded at least six strikeouts in five of his 11 starts this season while allowing two earned runs or less in six starts.
The Bulls will return to MAC play on Friday evening at 6:00 pm as they open up a three-game series in Oxford, OH against Miami (OH).
