OXFORD, Ohio — The University at Buffalo softball team lost the final game of a three-game series at Miami of Ohio on Saturday afternoon as the Bulls fell to the RedHawks, 8-5. The game was UB’s final regular season road contest of the year.
Buffalo got out to the quick start by scoring two runs in the top of the first on a two-run shot from sophomore Catrell Robertson, who scored Danielle Lallos after she reached base on a two-out single. Miami got one run back in the bottom of the first and scored three in the bottom of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead, but UB came back again.
In the top of the fifth, the Bulls put the first two runners on base and they both came in to score on a double down the left field line from Lallos. The junior then came in to score later in the inning on a fielder’s choice from freshman Jessica Goldyn, giving the Bulls a 5-4 lead.
However, the lead was short lived as Miami put the first two runners on base in the bottom half of the inning. The Bulls got two outs due to the infield fly rule, but a single to left field followed by a three-run home run turned it into a four-run inning, give the RedHawks an 8-5 lead.
The Bulls put the first two on in the sixth, but couldn’t get a runner past second. They put another runner at second with one away in the seventh, but again came up empty.
Junior Charlotte Miller picked up the loss in relief, while Ally Power started the game and came back in following the two batters pitched to by Miller. Power struck out three in 6.0 innings.
The Bulls outhit Miami in the contest, 10-9. Lallos went 3-for-4 from the plate with a pair of RBI’s, while Gabby Keller went 2-for-4. Five other Buffalo players each had one hit.
“Today was a dogfight,” said head coach Trena Peel. “I tip my hat to Miami who battled back and forth with us. It was great to see Catrell stepping up to set the tone in the first inning with another bomb and Danielle had a huge two-run double. This was a tough loss again because we out hit them and we had less errors. I am proud of us for fighting until the very last out.”
The Bulls will now return to Nan Harvey Field as they open up an eight-game homestand to close out the regular season. It begins on Friday when Buffalo welcomes Kent State in for a three-game series. It begins with a single game at 3 p.m.
