OXFORD, Ohio – The Miami (OH) RedHawks took the first two games of a three-game series on Friday as they defeated the University at Buffalo softball team 6-3 in the opener and 1-0 in the second contest.
The RedHawks took a 1-0 lead in the first game before the Bulls came back, scoring three straight runs. They tied the game in the top of the second as Danielle Lallos was hit by a pitch to open the inning and she was driven home on a double to left field from freshman Jenelle Martinez.
UB added a pair in the third as Lallos singled through the right side to score junior Leandra Jew and Martinez grounded out, scoring pinch runner Nicolette Jacobs. The Bulls continued to lead 3-1 until Miami tied it up in the bottom of the third on a two-run home run and then the RedHawks took the lead with three runs in the fourth.
Charlotte Miller picked up the loss as she allowed eight hits and six runs in the complete-game effort. Jew went 2-for-2 in the contest, while Lallos, Martinez, and Catrell Robertson each recorded hits. Martinez drove in two of the three Buffalo runs.
The second game was a pitcher’s duel as just one run was scored in the bottom of the fourth by Miami (OH) off Buffalo starter Ally Power. The Bulls had their best opportunity in the top of the fourth as they put a pair of runners on base. In the sixth, they got a two-out double from Martinez, who was stranded there.
Power picked up the hard-luck loss as she scattered six hits and struck out four. Martinez and freshman Gabby Keller each had two hits in the game as they combined for four of Buffalo’s five hits.
“We played well, but we didn’t execute in small ball situations and we had costly base running mistakes,” said head coach Trena Peel. “I love our fight and offensively we only had two strikeouts all day. We are driving the ball hard consistently and I have to give credit to Miami who made some great defensive plays to stops a few of our rallies.”
The two teams are scheduled to conclude their three-game series tomorrow at 1:30pm.
